The beautiful beaches of Vietnam from north to south - Part 2

Updated 9/13/2024

My second blog is about the beaches of Việt Nam. I find the soft sand, underneath my feet, and the sound of the incoming waves, to be calming and relaxing. Việt Nam has a long S-shape coastline, and numerous islands. Its scenic coast and beaches are now well known, by the travel and tourism industry.

Việt Nam has 2,000 miles of coastline, with two major islands: Côn Sơn and Phú Quốc. Twenty five of its provinces, and its three major cities: Hải Phòng, Đà Nẵng, and Hồ Chí Minh, border the East Sea (Đông Hải).

North Central Việt Nam

All six provinces have beautiful beaches and one of them is in a world class bay. Also, the existence of the Đông Sơn Culture, which dated back to 1000 BCE, was first discovered in Thanh Hóa, in 1924.

Thanh Hóa Province

Thanh Hoá has a number of beaches. One of them is very popular and well known since French colonial time. Most importantly, the Đông Sơn Culture, one of the three ancient cultures in Việt Nam, was first discovered here in 1924. Relics from this culture were also found later at other sites, throughout northern Việt Nam. The Đông Sơn Culture is dated from 1000 BCE to 100 BCE. Interestingly, artifacts from pre-Đông Sơn, some were dated four thousand years ago, were also found at these sites. Many Vietnamese scholars believe the Văn Lang Kingdom, the first in recorded Vietnamese history, is not a myth, on this basis.

• Wealthy families built their villas along Sầm Sơn Beach when Vietnam was still a French colony. Unfortunately, many of the villas were destroyed during the war. The beach has four areas: A - D, with a total length of almost 4 miles. It is very popular in the summer.

• Hải Tiến Beach, with Mount Linh Trường to the north, is 7.5 mile long. It is not too far from Hà Nội, about 100 miles south. The beach has soft white sand and turquoise water.

• Hải Hòa Beach, still untouched by mass tourism, is about 12 miles in length. Mounts Sổi and Chay are south and Mê Island is off the coast.

• Đông Nghi Sơn Beach (aka Đông Beach) is on an ecological island that shares its name. It has retained its wild beauty. The island has four distinct seasons, and the best time to visit is between May and August.

• Tiên Trang Beach is only 1.5 miles in length, but still quite large, with about 250 acres in total area. It is a favorite with the locals during the summer.

• Quảng Nham Beach is still not well known to tourists. One can see many fishing boats in action from here.

Nghệ An Province

The coastline of Nghệ An is fifty mile long, with beaches, that have soft white sand and turquoise water, spreading over five districts.

• Cửa Lò Beach is one of the beautiful beaches in this part of Vietnam. It is more than 6 miles in length.

• Diễn Thành Beach boasts 15.5 miles. It is not yet overrun by mass tourism, and still retains its unspoiled beauty. According to a legend, this is where King An Dương (An Dương Vương) executed his daughter, Princess Mỵ Châu, for causing the downfall of his kingdom, before he committed suicide. While the story is based on a myth, a number of Vietnamese historians believe King An Dương is a real historical figure.

• The seven Quỳnh Beaches are in Quỳnh Lưu district and they are right next to each other, with a total length of more than 12 miles.

• Nghi Lộc has four unspoiled beaches, with white sand and alluring blue water. The main one, with Mount Lữ Sơn on three sides, is Lữ Beach, over 6 mile long.

Hà Tĩnh Province

Hà Tĩnh has a number of beautiful beaches with white sand and turquoise water. Some of them are wild and pristine.

• Thiên Cầm Beach, about 2 miles in length, is sandwiched between Mount Thiên Cẩm and Mount Đầu Voi. It got its name from a legend about a visit from King Hùng XIII, where he heard heavenly sounds during the night. In the morning, he gave the beach its name, which means "Heavenly Harp."

Quảng Bình Province

Đá Nhảy Beach is probably one of the more picturesque beaches in Quảng Bình, with its unusual rocky outcrops.

• Nhật Lệ Beach, in the City of Đồng Hới, along Trương Pháp Street, has white sand and a little more than a mile in length.

• Hải Ninh Beach, unspoiled and wild, is not well known to tourists.

• Cảnh Dương Beach is located in the fishing Village of Cảnh Dương. The village was established in 1634. Its history is tied to the history of the uprisings against the French during colonial period.

Quảng Trị Province

Quảng Trị has one beach, that is referred to as "the Queen of beaches," because it was frequent by the royal family, and aristocrats in Huế. It also has another distinction of being near the dividing line between North and South Vietnam, from 1954 to 1975.

• Cửa Việt Beach is long and wide, with clear emerald water and soft white sand.

• Cửa Tùng Beach is 9 miles in length, near Bến Hải River, the dividing line between North and South Vietnam, from 1954 to 1975. It is also known as "the Queen of beaches."

• Mỹ Thủy Beach is located in the fishing village that bears its name. The provincial government has started a project in 2024, to create a deep sea port here.

Thừa Thiên Huế Province

In addition to being known as a city with a royal past, Huế is also known for the beautiful beaches and world class bay.

• Thuận An Beach is about 7.5 miles in length, with white sand and clear turquoise water. Emperor Thiệu Trị (the third Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty) ranked this place, tenth, in his poem about the twenty beautiful sceneries in Huế.

• Vinh Thanh Beach, known for having excellent seafood, is unspoiled.

• Hàm Rồng Beach, with Mount Linh Thái on its back, has two primary colors in the summer: green ( from the moss) and deep brown (from the rocks). It is a great place for camping.

• Hải Dương Beach, not very easy to access, is still pristine. It has fine white sand and large waves, suitable for surfing.

• Phú Diên is famous for its 8th century Champa Tower, which was part of a Hindu Temple Complex. It was discovered in 2001, by accident. The tower was buried 23 foot deep, in the sand. The beach is about 5 miles in length, with white sand and blue water.

• Lăng Cô Bay is more than 26 mile long, and is one of the world's most beautiful bays, along with Hạ Long's and Nha Trang's, according to the UNESCO Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club. Emperor Khải Định (the twelfth Emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty) called this place "the dwelling of the gods and fairies." The bay has three awesome beaches: Cảnh Dương, Chân Mây, and Lăng Cô. The beaches have long stretch of white sand and turquoise water. Lăng Cô, itself, is more than 6 mile long. Here, the verdant mountain is on one side and the sapphire sea is on the other. Can one ask for more? Lăng Cô Bay is much closer to Đà Nẵng than to Huế, about one third of the distance.
